How to play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Open Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe, check the instructions and begin a round. Win three mini-boards in a row on the large board. Look at what changes after your first action. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Same-device two players.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Win three mini-boards in a row on the large board. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Play inside the required mini-board.
  2. Your selected square sends the opponent to the corresponding mini-board.
  3. A closed required board permits play in any open board.
  4. Win local boards, then a large-board line.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

A top-right cell sends the next player to the top-right mini-board. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

A single local win does not finish the overall game. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
