How to play Tangram

Tangram gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
