How to play 2048

Take a moment with 2048 before moving to another game. Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Use the example below to understand a decision. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Move the board using an arrow key, swipe, or a direction button.
  2. Equal adjacent tiles combine once per move; their new value is added to your score.
  3. Keep an empty lane where possible. Undo reverses the most recent move.
  4. Use New round to begin with two tiles.

Controls

Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

A row containing 4, 0, 4, 0 can slide left and join into an 8. The empty cells between equal values do not block the merge. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

A swipe that leaves the board unchanged does not add a new tile. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.

Common questions

On this playing page, what is the goal of 2048?

The key detail is this: Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round.

Before I begin, how do I control 2048?

Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons.

For this browser game, what example helps explain 2048?

Keep this in mind: Moving [2, 2, 2, 2] left produces [4, 4, 0, 0], not [8, 0, 0, 0]. Each tile merges at most once in that move.

While learning, which play mode does 2048 use?

Keep this in mind: The mode on this page is Solo. Same-device play uses one screen; this game library does not provide internet matchmaking.
