How to play Sokoban

Bring your attention to one round of Sokoban. Push every crate onto a target. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Check the rule before repeating the action. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
